Protect yourself from vehicle-related crime
Did you know that almost 72% of all the notifications involving property fraud were motor-vehicle related? Vehicle-related insurance fraud is the most common type of insurance fraud in VA, but it is not the only vehicle-related crime that you need to protect yourself against. Vehicle theft is real, and prevention is the best way to combat it.
In addition to the Stamp Out Fraud program, Virginia State Police aims to remind citizens of vehicle theft risk and how to best protect themselves with the Help Eliminate Auto Theft (HEAT) program.
July is nationally recognized as Vehicle Theft Prevention Month. The Virginia State Police’s objective, for the month of July, is to share the prevention tips and tools that will keep you and your car safe. The warmer months are a prime time for vehicle-related crimes. Nearly 40 percent of all vehicle theft incidents occur between the months of July and September. Increased situational awareness and safe habits can prevent you from becoming a victim.
Here are a few simple prevention tips:
- Always take your keys with you
- Never leave your possessions in plain sight
- Always park in a well-lit, high-traffic area
